At the book launch in PUBLICS, Tellervo Kalleinen & Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen will introduce Conversation Park project followed by response from prominent Finnish researchers on participation – Kaija Kaitavuori and Robin Lybeck – providing additional commentary and insights with respect to their expertise on participatory art and participatory urban planning.
In 2019 thirty residents between 6 to 89 years old became players in a two-year-long “Public Space Game”. The mission was to turn thirty individual ideas for a park into a collective urban reality in 6 game moves. The cooperative park was opened in 2020. Conversation Park is a Lönnström Project and made possible by the Lönnström Art Museum in Rauma.
In the book Kalleinen & Kochta-Kalleinen describe their original intentions when designing the game and share their insights gained whilst working on the Conversation Park for four years. A WALK ON THE EDGE @ WALK & TALK, AZORES, PORTUGAL, 23 JULY, 2022
A walk on the edge is a performative experience and a collective journey in Fenais da Luz, a village on the North coast of São Miguel Island. See the documentation video
The pathway connects Azores’ history, a local tragedy from the 1980s, and the audience members’ personal relationship to owning. Starting from the overwhelming idea that If you live on the edge, you might lose your belongings overnight, the collective began to raise questions about the meaning of ownership and its relation to property, society and time. Do you own what you have?
A walk on the edge is a multidisciplinary art piece, developed by architect duo Mezzo Atelier – Joana Oliveira (PT) and Giacomo Mezzadri (IT) – choreographer and artist Gustavo Ciriaco (PT, BR), theatre director, musician and writer Ovidiu Mihaita (RO) and contemporary artist and songwriter Tellervo Kalleinen (FIN). Local musicians and performers are an integral part of the piece.
Walk&Talk designates the Azores Arts Festival, which takes place every year in July, on the island of São Miguel. Experimental and participatory, the festival motivates the creation of new objects in dialogue with the territory and acts in the involvement of local and migrant communities around the knowledge generated in the expanded field of the arts, intersecting visual arts, performance, music, architecture, and design.
Centriphery is a collaborative project between nine partner organizations based throughout Europe, which includes Walk&Talk – Arts Festival, co-funded by the European Commission’s Creative Europe program.
Playing Adults
The performance turned the playground into an absurd stage of adulthood, and created an awkward tension and dialogue between generations. Four adult actors presented children ́s views about adulthood, with the audience following them and occasionally participating in the acts. As they slid down, they shouted what kind of adults they didn’t want become. While balancing on the seesaw, the performers shared children ́s thoughts on adult dilemmas. The piece brings out children’s critical views and hopeful thoughts about their uncertain future as adults in a rapidly changing world.

People mostly believe their thought processes to be both rational and sensible. And yet, systemic mistakes influence our thinking far more than we realise.
These universally shared mental shortcuts are known as cognitive biases. The best-known cognitive bias is the confirmation bias which leads us to select information that supports our existing views. BIASED invites the audience to explore these hidden notions and unconscious factors that drive our actions.
BIASED is born out of collaboration between five artists. Matija Kezele from Croatia, Fred Nevche from France, and Tellervo Kalleinen, Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, and Anna-Mari Karvonen from Finland explored the theme as a part of Espoo City Theatre’s contribution to Centriphery project.

In the performance we share our struggles of living up to our values and ideals. This session is intended for professional “re-imagineers” who work day in and out on the transformation of society. In our experiment we want to understand how individuals manage to translate the goals and ideals of their daily work into their private life. Do you advocate a basic universal income but don’t know how to deal with your kids’ pocket money? Do you implement national citizens assemblies but cannot decide on the family vacation? Are you a vegan eating meat in your dreams? Do you have occasionally brief moments of feeling like a hypocrite? Then this is the right session for you. In full anonymity we share cases about such dissonances. The presented cases – your cases – will be discussed by our peer-to-peer support network. At the same time each case will be fed into an immature human AI system called “Åsa and Max” that is particularly responsive to so called intention-behavior discrepancies. Our system – while still in its infancy – will unapologetically try to produce recommendations for each case. It nevertheless needs to be trained by providing feedback on the presented recommendations.
Join us in trying to apply big picture ideas on a very small scale.

RESEARCH TRIPS TO ARMENIA AND THE AZORES IN AUTUMN 2021
If corona allows, the trips to Armenia and The Azores will finally take place in autumn 2021. The new project in Armenia is a collaboration with Art As Foundation, with whom we have a history of working together.
The new work in The Azores will be part of Walk & Talk festival and will be a collaboration between Tellervo Kalleinen, Gustavo Ciriaco, Joana Oliveira, Giacomo Mezzadri and Ovidiu Mihaita. The larger framework for the project is Centriphery.
PLAYING ADULTS PREMIERING @ TROUBLE FESTIVAL, BRUSSELS, 11 July, 2021
We take part in the Trouble festival in Belgium, 11 July 2021 with our performance Playing Adults. In the piece four adult actors perform adults based on observations and views of children, who have been interviewed for the piece. The performance turns the local Parc Liedekerke -playground into an absurd stage of adulthood.
The piece highlights the critical views and hopeful thoughts of children about their future in a changing world. Playing Adults creates an awkward tension and a dialogue between generations. While sliding down from a castle performers shout descriptions of adults the interviewed children don’t want to become like. While standing on a seesaw the performers tell children’s reflections about dilemmas related to adulthood.
Due to the pandemia, we direct the performance from a distance. The performers of the piece are Maxime Bodson, Jean Fürst, Julia Ghysels and Emilienne Tempels and the assistant director is Francoise Berlanger. Trouble festival is curated by Antoine Pickels.
The interviews in Brussels are made by Matéo Vigné, who played also a crucial part in location scouting and coordination. With the support of the Finnish Cultural Institute.
KESKUSTELUPUISTO´S APP IS RELEASED!
It is now possible to get to know Keskustelupuisto (Conversation Park) through a mobile phone app, designed by Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen and co-created with the project participants. The app is currently only partly in English, but please have a look and get a sense of the project, where 21 inhabitants of Rauma negotiated and realised a new park together from the scratch. In the app the participants introduce the park, and you can hear in depth interviews with them before and after the 2 year park making process. Some of the features work only at the park, such as the park disco. You can download it for free from play stores: the name of the app is Keskustelupuisto. Any feedback welcome!

Thirty residents between the ages of 6 and 89 took part in a two-year Public Space Game. Their mission was to transform thirty individual visions into a single urban park in the centre of Rauma, Finland. The game-like process, designed and moderated by Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen and me during 2019-2020, unfolded over six phases, structured as six game moves.
The project was part of the Lönnström Project, a contemporary art programme initiated by Lönnström Art Museum.

Conversation Park – A Public Space Game culminates in the opening of a collectively designed park.
If you could decide, what kind of a park would you like to have in your home town?
This question was put to thirty Rauma residents between the ages 6–89 who had volunteered to participate in the Conversation Park (Keskustelupuisto) contemporary art project by the artist duo Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen. In the project, a new park was designed and built using a participatory scheme developed by the artists.
In April 2018, the project’s game board, a 1,900 square metre plot of undeveloped land in the centre of Rauma, was divided into 30 sections, which were distributed among the players by lot. Each player became the sovereign ruler of their own section. In five meetings held in the space of two years, each player received 200 euros to be used before the next meeting to further their vision of the park before the next meeting. In the sixth and last meeting, the players were collectively given 14,000 euros for the finalisation of the park. During the game, the players could choose to tend only their own section or to pool resources – the money, the land, the ideas. Kalleinen and Kochta-Kalleinen served as overseers without actually steering the direction of the game.
The process has involved countless discussions and negotiations among the players. As a result, the City of Rauma has now a unique and personal park which reflects both the needs of individuals and their common voice.
Conversation Park is part of the continuum of works created by the artist duo in their 18 years of collaboration. The works explore participation and the interplay and tensions between individuality and collectivity. This is the first artwork by the duo that is sited in the public space. The City of Rauma will maintain the park up to at least 2022.
The artists have documented the players’ experiences during the project. The documentation will be available in a mobile app published in conjunction with the opening of the park. An exhibition based on the materials will also be produced in the future.

101 For All
101 For All (Tellervo Kalleinen & Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, 2015) explores the personal stories behind opinions and the power of those who frame the results of surveys.
The 100 participants in the artwork form a cross-section of the Finnish population in terms of gender, age, region, education, income level, country of origin, and native language. Fifty-one of them are women, thirteen are over 70 years old and one holds a PhD.
In 2015, Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen visited the participants in their homes and interviewed them about their personal relationships to 30 divisive topics. The interviewees tried to identify personal life experiences and influences that shape their opinions.
The 1900 responses were used in an interactive video installation. The installation gives one viewer at a time the power to choose who speaks. Other visitors experience the work through the choices of that viewer, who controls which voices are heard and on which topics.

You are warmly welcome to For this dance, I will take the lead at Mad House Helsinki.
The audience is invited to experience the piece on a dance floor. The starting point for the piece is an experience of not being able to always influence your own life as much as you´d like to. The evening bases six dances, led by six participants. All of them bring along one life experience of being led by others.
The duration is ca 75min.
Everyone can move within the limits of their own capacity, and one does not need prior experience in dancing.

The concept for the piece is created by contemporary artist Tellervo Kalleinen. Her artistic discussion partner in the project is Maija Hirvanen.
The dances take place on Thursday 28 November 6pm or Saturday 30 November 4pm.

AVOIN OSALLISTUJAHAKU: TÄSSÄ TANSSISSA MINÄ VIEN
Haemme esitykseen ihmisiä jakamaan kokemuksensa siitä, kun on liikaa muiden vietävänä.
Esitys Tässä tanssissa minä vien koostuu osallistujien valitsemista musiikkikappaleista. Niiden soidessa osallistujat toimivat viejän roolissa – yleisön liikkuessa osallistujien ohjeiden mukaisesti.
Teoksessa pysähdytään tunteeseen siitä, kun ei pysty vaikuttamaan tarpeeksi omaan elämäänsä. Millaisissa tilanteissa ja millä elämän alueilla tämä tunne valtaa? Mitä kokemus kontrollin puutteesta kertoo yhteiskunnastamme tai ihmisten välisistä suhteista? Taiteilija Tellervo Kalleinen auttaa jokaista osallistujaa suunnittelemaan, kuinka osallistujan omaa kokemusta voi välittää yleisölle yhden tanssin ajan.
Jos olet kiinnostunut, hae mukaan! Teos ei edellytä kokemusta tanssista tai esiintymisestä. Osallistumiseen liittyy henkilökohtainen tapaaminen Tellervon kanssa, kahdet harjoitukset ja kolme esitystä Mad House -esitystilassa Helsingin Kalasatamassa 27.11. (ennakko), 28. ja 30.11.2019. Tapaamisissa on ruokatarjoilua. Osallistumisesta ei makseta.

Tellervo Kalleinen on palkittu nykytaiteilija, jonka työskentelyn ytimessä on luova yhteistyö. Tellervo on tehnyt osallistavia taideteoksia jo vuodesta 2003 asti ja hänen elokuviaan, näyttelyitään, tapahtumiaan ja performanssejaan on nähty ympäri maailmaa. www.tellervo.net
